Hi everyone. This is the very last post that will be made here on this site! Not because we’re closing, quite the opposite actually… we’re relaunching! In 2010 we attracted a massive 10,000 unique visitors and we hope to beat that number in 2011 with our brand new site. Don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything. Simply remain accessing Geek Base via www.GeekBase.co.uk and on Saturday that link should, if all goes well, take you to the new site. At approximately 3PM (UK time) the first post will be submitted to the new site and then around 2 minutes later an exciting post about Sony’s upcoming next-gen handheld (NGP / PSP2) will be published!

We’re looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Thank you for making Geek Base a success!

Album Review (British Sea Power – Valhalla Dancehall)

January 11, 2011 Leave a comment

British Sea Power have returned from the haze of beautifully made soundtracks to their fourth album proper. The album starts with a jumpy balls out rock classic ‘Who’s In Control’. The album is fast moving until third track ‘Georgie Ray’ which is a piano led track. The tempo starts up again with stand out song ‘Stunde Null’ which bursts out at high velocity and see’s British Sea Power return to the sound heard on ‘The Decline of British Sea Power’ (The band’s debut album). The tempo is kept alive with track ‘Mongk II’ which is the sequel to the track ‘Mongk’ from the band’s EP ‘Zeus’. ‘Luna’ is a slow starting piano led song but as the intro concludes the guitars kick in and the speed starts again only to slow for the verse, it is accompanied with neat sound effects of laughter which adds to the atmosphere of the track.

Next track ‘Baby’ moves at the same speed of ‘Georgie Ray’ and is a departure from the classic British Sea Power as it is constantly slow moving and relaxing. First single from ‘Valhalla Dancehall’ is ‘Living Is So Easy’ which a stab at modern life and simpleness of it. It is one of the finer tracks on the album as it mixes the slow tempo of ‘Baby’ and the fast tempo of second track ‘We Are Sound’. ‘Observe The Skies’ is a rock classic, the brass on this track makes it catchy. ‘Once More Now’ is an 11 minute non-mover which is fairly disappointing. Final track ‘Heavy Water’ is a techno pop final blast before the album end.

Source Code Trailer

November 22, 2010 Leave a comment

Well its finally here, the trailer for Duncan Jones’s second movie Source Code. After his 2009 sci fi spectacular Moon. us fans have been waiting for the coming follow-up Mute only to have it postponed for another movie titled Source Code. The story? Well the idea is quite simple, a soldier named Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up to find himself on a train in someone else’s body, before he can figure out what is happening BOOM! The train is destroyed in an explosion, he then wakes up in a room full of computers and is told that he must relive the last 8 minutes of  the passenger over and over again in order to find the bomber and figure out where the next bomb, which is set to go off in 6 hours, is. However, he forms an attraction to the woman sat opposite him (Michelle Monaghan) and begins to experiment with the idea, “what if I can save her life?”

I must say, I am looking forward to this movie, as a fan of Moon  I’m sure I won’t find it as emotional or heartbreaking, but I’m going to hold out on this one and hope it doesn’t suck. Source Code is out 15th April 2011

Album review (Kings of Leon – Come Around Sundown)

October 16, 2010 Leave a comment

They’re back after the world conquering ‘Only By The Night’ with ‘Come Around Sundown’ and after claims of returning to their roots with this album you can see where they are coming from but it’s not the same. The hooks aren’t quite as catchy as say ‘Red Morning Light’ or ‘Trani’. It all feels a bit boring to be honest.

There are some good points on the album such as ‘The Face’ and ‘Back Down South’. The album isn’t all bad. It just could be better.

Album review (Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy)

October 14, 2010 Leave a comment

This album is not something I wouldn’t normally go for, or even bother reviewing but given the smashes of singles from it I thought I’d see if it lived up to the hype. I’m glad I did as it is a fine hip-hop album, if you were expecting an album full of ‘Pass Out’s’ then I’m sorry but you’ll be disappointed.

The album touches on the rapper’s rise to fame and his life before the number 1 singles. It is a surprising album and the rapper has gained some indie credibility by claiming he wants to be the next Damon Albarn.
